What Makes This Dish So Tasty

This dish brings out the natural sweetness of sweet potatoes with a touch of warm spices. It’s comforting, flavorful, and perfect for sharing with family. The combination of creamy texture and rich taste makes it a timeless favorite.

Tips To Improve This Recipe

- Use fresh sweet potatoes for the best flavor and texture.
- Roast or boil sweet potatoes until tender before mashing to make mixing easier.
- Add spices gradually and taste as you go to balance sweetness and warmth.

Step 1

Warm your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with foil or parchment, then spread the sweet potatoes out on it. Bake them until they’re really tender, which usually takes about an hour to an hour and a half. Once they’re soft, take them out and let them cool for about 5 minutes before peeling off the skins.

Step 2

Pop the peeled sweet potatoes into a large bowl, and using a mixer with a paddle or whisk attachment, begin mashing them on low. Add half a cup of butter and mix until it’s fully combined. Next, stir in the white sugar, honey, brown sugar, salt, and nutmeg until everything is well blended. Then add the eggs and vanilla, and beat on medium speed for a couple of minutes.

Step 3

Lower the mixer speed and slowly pour in the warm milk. Give it a taste and tweak the salt or nutmeg if you think it needs it. Grab a 9x13-inch baking dish and grease it with a tablespoon of softened butter. Pour the sweet potato mixture in and spread it out evenly.

Step 4

For the topping, mix together brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and a pinch of salt in a bowl. Cut in some cold butter with your fingers until the mixture looks like coarse oatmeal with little lumps of butter. Stir in the pecans, then sprinkle this crumbly topping evenly over the sweet potatoes.

Step 5

Bake everything for about 30 to 45 minutes, until the topping turns golden and crispy and the sweet potatoes are set but still a bit soft in the center. Let it cool slightly before serving, and enjoy!

Serving Variations

Serve warm as a side to roasted meats or grilled vegetables. It pairs wonderfully with traditional Southern dishes like fried chicken or collard greens. Garnish with chopped pecans or fresh herbs for added texture and color.

Proper Storage Tips

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat gently on the stove or in the microwave, adding a splash of milk or butter to keep it creamy. For longer storage, freeze in a sealed container for up to 2 months.
