Why This Dish Is Worth Trying

These scones offer a perfect balance of tart and sweet flavors with the fresh burst of cranberries and citrusy orange zest. Made with wheat flour, they bring a wholesome texture that feels hearty without being heavy. They are ideal for breakfast or an afternoon treat.

Quick Kitchen Tips

- Use cold butter to ensure the scones are flaky and tender.
- Do not overmix the dough to keep the texture light and crumbly.
- Brush the tops with a little milk or egg wash before baking for a golden finish.

Directions

Heat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a baking sheet. In a big bowl, combine the whole wheat flour, wheat germ, brown sugar, baking powder, salt, and nutmeg. Cut in the shortening until the mixture looks crumbly. Then, stir in the cranberries and orange zest. In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg, milk, and orange juice. Make a little well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in the wet mixture. Mix everything until it just comes together into a dough. Turn it out onto a floured surface and knead it gently a few times so it holds together. Roll the dough out to about half an inch thick, then use a biscuit cutter to cut out circles. Arrange the scones a couple of inches apart on your baking sheet. Pop them in the oven and bake for 15 to 20 minutes, until they’re golden on top and bottom. Enjoy them warm!

Serving Recommendations

Enjoy these scones warm with a spread of butter or cream cheese. They also pair wonderfully with a drizzle of honey or a dollop of orange marmalade. Serve alongside a cup of tea or coffee for a cozy snack.

Storing Leftovers

Store any leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to two days. To keep them fresh longer, freeze the scones in a sealed bag for up to one month. Reheat gently in the oven or toaster before serving.
